In 1942 the author C. S. Forester asked Roald Dahl to write down some notes about his time in the RAF so that he could shape them into a story. However, his notes were so good that they were printed in the Saturday Evening Post just as they were. This was Roald Dahl’s first published work and it made him realise he had a real talent for writing.
